Usage notes

According to Wiktionary, French baragouin(er) derives:

From the Breton words bara (“bread”) and gwin (“wine”) or gwin, from Latin vīnum. The contemptuous word dates back to the Middle Ages, first attested in 1396, the year of the marriage of John VI, Duke of Brittany with Joan of France.

In November 2006, World Wide Words' Michael Quinion called its rare, borrowed English form "strange and uncouth", adding:

It is said that Breton pilgrims on their way to holy places demanded bread and wine from their hosts in inns along the route. The innkeepers, not understanding their language, created baragouin as a word for a language so strange as to be unintelligible.
