Usage notes

As with the similar nal, negates roots it is attached to, such as in nemÁmeríkesili (non-American); nemveskildaini (non-animated); nemvanzaurde (non-profit); and nemféproadaidi (noncommercial). Nem- is derivational (forming new words), while nal- is inflectional (the meaning does not change): cf. nemIngilnongat (SBJ is non-English [not among any works in the English language]) vs. naŕIngilnongat (it is false that SBJ is in English). See also nid (no), naul (none/zero [0]), ver (opposite/reverse/backwards), moin (except/excluding/but), tug (outside/away from in location), ond (without/lacking/-less), eriv (take away/delete/remove/erase/wipe), and ódim/opon (against/anti-).

The etymon is the basis of the character name Captain Nemo (from Jules Verne's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea).
